How Do You Get to Kinosaki Onsen from Osaka and Kyoto?

Published 2026-10-04 · Sources checked 2026-10-04 · Treasure Hunting Co., Ltd.

This guide is for visitors who want to reach Kinosaki Onsen, a hot spring town in northern Hyogo Prefecture, from Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe or Himeji. It covers the train, the bus, the car and the small airport nearby, and what happens when you arrive at the station.

We used the official tourism website of Toyooka City, which is run by Toyooka Tourism Innovation, and the Japan National Tourism Organization. All pages were read on 2026-10-04. Train and bus times change, so check the operators' own timetables before you travel.

The short answer

The tourism website says Kinosaki has its own station on the San'in Line of the Japan Railway system. It describes the town as near the north shore of Hyogo, one train stop from the Sea of Japan. It also says the trip takes 2.5 hours by train from Kyoto and Osaka.

A JR Pass or a JR West Rail Pass can be used to reach Kinosaki. The same page says you can also come by bus, car or plane.

By train

Kinosaki Onsen Station is served by JR Limited Express trains from Kyoto, Osaka, Sannomiya and Himeji. The tourism website adds that every Limited Express train requires you to reserve a seat in advance.

The site sends visitors to the JR West website for accurate times and train lists. It shows separate route guides for visitors starting from Kyoto or Tokyo, from Kansai Airport or Osaka, and from Amanohashidate.

One note concerns the route from Amanohashidate. It requires a change of train lines from the Kyoto Tango Railway to the Japan Railway. A JR Pass is not accepted on the Kyoto Tango Railway line, so you buy a ticket at the station.

By bus

The tourism website says Zentan Bus runs direct buses between Osaka and Kinosaki, and between Kobe and Kinosaki. It does not list fares or times, and sends readers to the bus company's website for routes and prices.

By car

You can rent a car in Japan with a valid driver's licence from your home country plus a valid international driving permit. The site also lets you book a rental car through its own page.

It shows driving routes from Kyoto Station, from Sannomiya Station in Kobe, and from Osaka Station. The town also tests car-free streets from time to time. A 2025 notice from the local tourism association, for example, closed town parking lots for four days and asked drivers to park at Kinosaki Port Center instead. Check for a notice like this before you drive in.

By plane

The tourism website says flights bound for Kounotori Tajima Airport leave daily from Osaka's Itami Airport. A direct bus from the airport to Kinosaki Onsen is scheduled to leave shortly after each flight arrives.

When you arrive at the station

If you stay at a ryokan, the town's etiquette page describes a free shuttle bus from the station to the ryokan. It has no official timetable. It runs in line with the arrivals and departures of Limited Express trains, and is generally available between 12:30 pm and 6 pm.

To use it, look for staff waiting outside the station. They ask people whether they are staying in Kinosaki. Tell them the name of your ryokan, and they will direct you to the bus and tell the driver where to drop you off.

If no staff are outside, cross the street. You will see the Kinosaki Onsen Ryokan Service Center. Tell your ryokan what time you expect to reach the station.

If you arrive early, you can bring your luggage to the same service center. They can hold it for you, or take it to your ryokan when possible. The page says there may be a small fee.
